Meeting of the Chairs of sections with local archivists

At the 39th CITRA conference in Curacao, national archivists expressed their desire to reserve time at the next conference to discuss specific issues. The CITRA Bureau agreed to their request at the April 2007 meeting in Reykjavik, and are organizing a meeting between the section and association presidents and Canadian archivists to take place during the conference. The purpose is to allow for an exchange of ideas between professionals from the host country and those visiting from abroad on a common topic. To this end, we are organizing this half-day of discussions to which we seek your active participation.

Topic: Promoting archives and archivists within society: recent initiatives

The profession of archivist must continuously be promoted within society. Accordingly, archivists must unfailingly continue to share their achievements. For this, archivists must constantly innovate.

It is in this spirit that this discussion between archivists will take place, with an aim to:

Reveal some recent initiatives in the promotion of archives and archivists within society.

More specifically, this activity aims to:

Foster the exchange and sharing of experience between archivists who are members of the ICA and professionals from the host country on a common topic;
Discuss the relevance of developing a document akin to a "declaration" or "manifesto" at the international level; and
Assess the relevance of organizing days or months celebrating archives, as is done in other countries.

To conduct this activity, we are counting on the presence of approximately 40 ICA archivists (section presidents and association representatives) and some 20 Canadian archivists. All of these participants will receive documentation relating to the initiatives in question prior to the meeting.

Activity Schedule

2:00 p.m. Presentation of the activity: context, objectives, order

2:15 p.m. Three archivists will make brief presentations (15 minutes) on the various initiative indicated below.

3:00 p.m. Questions for the speakers

3:30 p.m. Break

4:00 p.m. Four or five discussion groups meet on the relevance of undertaking a project at the international level

4:45 p.m. Plenary (conclusion)

5:30 p.m. End of activity
